NURS404 CAPS Public Health

This course is a ten-week course that is part of the sequence of CAPS Nursing courses. This course consists of both classroom and clinical. When the students graduate from the CAPS Nursing program, they are eligible to apply for the Minnesota State Board of Nursing Public Health Certificate.

In the course, we have added some Virtual Simulations for clinical replacement. The students have enjoyed the flexibility of these simulations, and have remarked that they learned about different Public Health concepts by completing them. They take place in the Virtual World of Second Life and are asynchronous. See the related syllabus, course assignments and pictures.

Overview of Virtual Reality Simulation Assignments

See below for two examples of the Virtual Simulation assignments for this course. For each assignment there is a didactic portion that needs to be completed prior to the Virtual Reality Simulation. After the simulation is completed, the students are placed in groups and discuss guided reflection questions in the Moodle Discussion forum. Each group needs to come to a conclusion and design a plan for the clients involved in the simulation scenarios.

These learning activities take place in the virtual world of Second Life, where I own two virtual learning spaces. I designed these assignments as a more flexible way to provide some clinical hours for our degree completion students who have very busy lives.
